In the Plateau area, the most common for winter were robes of antelope, elk, and mountain sheep, while in summer elkskins without the hair were worn. Beaver skins and those of other small animals were sometimes pieced together. According to Grinnell, the Blackfoot, east of the Rocky Mountains, also used these various forms of robes.

The Plains women wore leggings of deer or mountain sheep skins made to fit snugly, extending from the ankle to above the knee. They were slipped on like a stocking and tied top and bottom. Among some of the tribes the women decorate their leggings with beaded or painted designs to indicate their husbands’ war honors.

The Clothes of the Plain Indians were mainly made from buffalo and deer hide. The women would mend the clothes. Cots and robes were made to keep them warm during the Winter months.

Plains Indian dolls often have intricate beadwork. Traditional Native American clothing today is generally reserved for ceremonies and powwows. Often referred to as regalia, these contemporary pieces still connect the wearer with tribe, family, and ancestors.

At modern-day festivals and powwows, one sees warbonnets on Indians of tribes from other parts of North America. But this particular type of headdress originated among the Plains tribes. Only a few men wore warbonnets, those who earned the privilege to do so in warfare.
