There is a clear indication of the East India Company on the map, with the seal located very close to where Bombay is presented. Tracking the influence of the East India Company allows us an insight into Britain’s relationship with India.

The East India Company (EIC) [a] was an English, and later British, joint-stock company that was founded in 1600 and dissolved in 1874. [4] It was formed to trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with the East Indies (South Asia and Southeast Asia), and later with East Asia.

The British East India Company began trading with the Indian subcontinent in the 1600s and, by the beginning of the 18th century, had established trading bases at coastal points, including Calcutta, Bombay and Madras.
