What is the Irish Seanad and how are senators elected?
Independent Senator Michael McDowell has become the first candidate elected to Seanad Éireann (the upper house of the Irish parliament). McDowell, a former tánaiste (deputy prime minister), has been a senator for the National University of Ireland since 2016.
Seanad count underway for local candidates
Counting got underway for the Seanad’s agricultural panel at lunchtime today. Outgoing senator Eugene Murphy is hoping to retain his seat in the Oireachtas, after breaking with Fianna Fáil and running in the general election as an independent.
First candidates elected to Seanad as counting continues
Independents Michael McDowell, Ronán Mullen and Alice Mary Higgins have all been re-elected to the Seanad. Mr McDowell was the first to be elected in the National University of Ireland (NUI) panel, with 11,390 first-preference votes.
