An effort is underway to verify, mark, and recognize a 160-year-old potential mass grave site in Rienzi. On June 6, 1864, Confederate and Union troops fought along what is now Highway 356.

A tomb containing 24 people was discovered during a research expedition in Peru. Due to the nature of the remains' injuries, archeologists surmise that all 24 people died in a battle.
