TORONTO (AP) — The Liberal Party has won the federal election in Canada, culminating a process marked by U.S. President Donald Trump threats on a trade war and of making the country the 51st American state.

In a social media post on the day of Canada's election, President Donald Trump suggested that Canadians should vote for him in order for Canada to become the 51st state.

Canadian Prime Minster Mark Carney's Liberal Party will retain its hold on power, in a reversal of fortunes seen largely as a reaction to Mr. Trump's actions and rhetoric.
