The SS United States’ on-again, off-again departure has been delayed again. The Florida county that purchased it says it will leave Wednesday, Feb. 19.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The iconic SS United States is set to embark on its final journey Wednesday, heading for a watery grave in the Gulf of Mexico. The rusting ocean liner, built in 1952, will be towed from Philadelphia Harbor to a site off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, where it will be sunk to create an artificial reef.

The process of relocating the ship to Okaloosa County, Fla., which paid $1 million for the vessel, has been a mammoth undertaking. Officials have had to contend with the coordination of dozens of parties and navigate not just the waters of the Delaware River and the Atlantic, but a maze of bureaucracy as well.

The historic ship will now leave South Philadelphia at 12:51 p.m., a 24-hour delay due to high winds, on its trip to become an artificial reef.
