The U.S. Education Department notified Columbia’s accreditor on Wednesday that the school was in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws.

Columbia and the Middle States Commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Any revocation of the school’s accreditation could have significant implications for students. Some 21% of Columbia College and Columbia Engineering undergraduates receive the Pell Grant,
