Southern Cayuga stopped using its longtime prior mascot, "Chiefs," after the New York State Education Department announced a ban on Native American nicknames and imagery in schools in November 2022.

School Board attorney David Hollenbeck said to the best of his knowledge, the Viking logo has been the symbol of the Minnesota Vikings since the franchise was created in 1960.
