After being swallowed alive, Japanese eels were able to escape from a predator fish’s stomach and swim to freedom through the fish’s gills, new research shows.
Its fish production increased 24-fold in the two decades leading up to 2021 and, unlike its neighbors, most of its fish catch is inland, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization or FAO.
The young eels could spend roughly three minutes inside the fish before dying, the researcher found. Those that escaped successfully spent just under a minute liberating themselves.
Over the course of a year, the researchers recorded 32 eels being captured by the fish, with at least part of their bodies entering the predator’s stomach. Of those eels, 28 tried to escape.
