College football’s annual rite of spring seems to be withering. Texas on Thursday became the latest major program to ditch or change it’s annual spring scrimmage that has long been a staple for fans eager to see the rising stars of their program and get a peek into the upcoming season.

AUSTIN — Texas announced Thursday that it will not hold a spring football game for the first time in head coach Steve Sarkisian’s four-year Longhorn tenure. Sarkisian made the announcement on a football podcast and cited the wear and tear of two consecutive long seasons as the reason for the cancellation.
