You can’t watch the trailer for Pedro Pascal’s new movie Freaky Tales and not think of the 1990s. Mainly that’s because the film is set right on the cusp of the decade, 1987, but also the idea of a violent, weird, sprawling single California city almost-anthology brings to mind one of the best films of the decade: Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Oakland is set for a starring role on the big screen. The trailer for "Freaky Tales" has come out, a film that was shot in the city back in 2022. Actor Pedro Pascal is the star and the name is from a 1987 song by Oakland rap legend, Too $hort. Too $hort is also one of the film's producers.

The flashback trailer opens with Pascal’s character Clint narrating the 1987-set Oakland story as clips of Normani portraying a musician flash by. “The underdog thinks he can do the impossible: to feed the bully, sell enough mixtapes to get out of the hood,” says Clint. “I can say with certainty, this underdog has seen his last day.”
