East Palestine will get $22 million in a settlement from Norfolk Southern on top of the already $13 million already paid.

The Village of East Palestine and Norfolk Southern have announced a $22 million settlement resolving all of the village’s claims arising from a disastrous train derailment near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border in 2023.

A final multi-million dollar settlement was reached in the toxic February 2023 trail derailment in Ohio, according to new information.

It was two years ago that the lives of residents of nearby East Palestine, Ohio, and the Darlington area of Beaver County just inside Pennsylvania were blown up by a train derailment that burned for days and then was exploded, creating a chemical cloud that hung for hours over the region.

With the statute of limitations to file suit against Norfolk Southern for damages inflicted by the 2023 train derailment and subsequent chemical release less than a week away, East Palestine Council announced the village and the railroad have reached a settlement.
