April 22, 2022 / 12:30 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia VILLANOVA, Pa. (CBS) – Jay Wright did his best to keep his emotions attuned as he formally announced his retirement as Villanova's basketball coach.

Wright retired from coaching in 2022 after reaching his fourth Final Four at Villanova. When he retired, he did leave the door open a smidge to perhaps one day coach in the NBA.

Before he made the decision to retire after 21 seasons as men's basketball coach at Villanova, Jay Wright said he lacked the same "edge" this season that he had enjoyed in the past, he said Friday.

Wright, 60, took over at Villanova in 2001 after spending seven seasons as the head coach at Hofstra. He slowly built the Wildcats into one of the best programs in college basketball.
