In the run-up to the 97th Academy Awards – held in the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2 – fans speculated (and hoped) online that there might be an off-script moment, or at the very least a surprise winner.

Mikey Madison won best actress for her breakthrough performance in Anora, a victory that came over the category favorite, Demi Moore (The Substance).

Anora is a romantic comedy film starring Mikey Madison in a titular role. The film premiered on May 21, 2024, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and later it was released in theaters on October 18, 2024.
