President's Rule in Manipur imposed due to lack of consensus on Chief Minister, ethnic violence, and constitutional machinery failure.

The Indian federal government took over direct control of the restive northeastern state of Manipur on Thursday after the region's chief minister resigned amid ethnic violence that has killed at least 250 people over two years and displaced thousands.

This comes four days after northeastern state's Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post on February 9. Singh resigned on February 9 and was asked by the governor to continue in office till alternative arrangements were made.

Following the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday reiterated the state's territorial integrity would remain intact and vowed his party's commitment to restoring peace in the region.

Ethnic violence between Meiteis, who make up slightly more than half of the population, and the minority Kuki community has killed more than 250 people and displaced about 60,000 since May 2023.
