More than 170 million people across the United States, from the Mexican border to the Canadian border are under cold weather alerts ahead of a crippling winter storm expected to sweep through the south from Texas to Georgia,

Brutal cold and snowy roads to start the week, with temperatures barely reaching double digits during the day and falling below zero at night. Wind will make it feel like 10 to 15 degrees below zero at times Monday night and Tuesday morning,

Starting this week into next, a lobe of the polar vortex will descend into the U.S. and bring with it brutally cold temperatures. Here's the forecast for this week:

Bundle up. The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for the Lansing region that begins at midnight.

The coldest weather of the winter is here and won’t relent until late this week. Highs may not escape the 20s until Friday; on Wednesday, they may not surpass the teens. While it’s cold, it’s dry. Significant snow is not in the forecast this week. By the weekend, temperatures will start to moderate some.

Dangerous cold arrives Monday morning in Chicago. The brutally cold morning brings wind chills of -20 to -25 degrees. A cold weather advisory is in effect until noon. The core of the polar air will settle across the Chicago area Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Dangerous bitter cold temperatures and wind chills far below zero are expected in the Chicago area Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

A piece of the polar vortex is spilling into the Midwest, creating extreme cold for the Chicago area and northwest Indiana for the next few days.

AccuWeather forecasts there will be a high of 10 degrees in Chicago on Sunday, 11 degrees on Monday and 6 degrees on Tuesday – with temperatures rising after that. However, wind will bring real-feel temperatures well below zero.
