RALEIGH, N.C. -- NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and many other League executives were at Lenovo Center on Wednesday to see Alex Ovechkin score his 892nd goal, moving the Washington Capitals forward to within three of breaking Wayne Gretzky 's NHL record of 894.

Two hockey dignitaries were in attendance Friday night to witness the Great 8 pursue NHL history. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky were in the building together for the Washington Capitals’ game against the Chicago Blackhawks as left winger Alex Ovechkin tied Gretzky's all-time regular season career goals record of 894

Ovechkin scored his 892nd career goal this week, moving to within three of breaking the all-time scoring record held by Wayne Gretzky. With Ovechkin now just a hat trick away from setting the record, Bettman said he plans for a traveling party to attend all of his remaining games to be ready for the moment.
