Firefighters in Maui are battling a brush fire burning above Kaanapali, Hawaii, on Monday. The fire is near the old Sugar Cane Train warehouse, the Maui Emergency Management Agency said. Both lanes of Honoapiʻilani Highway between Puʻukoliʻi Road and Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway have been shut down amid firefighting efforts,

At 12:22 p.m., county officials closed both lanes of the highway — between Puukolii Road and Lower Honoapiilani Highway near the old Sugar Cane warehouse. Motorists are asked to avoid the area to allow helicopters to draw water from the ocean for firefighting operations.

Officials said the private road in Kaanapali Golf Estates and Old Stuart Road has been opened for public use. Maui County said the brush fire was estimated at 90 acres and was “knocked down” just after 2 p.m.
