Sovereignty, at 9-1 and with Alvarado aboard, won the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday. He drew a bead on 3-1 favorite Journalism and chased him down to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

Sovereignty won the neck-and-neck race with Journalism down the final stretch of the Kentucky Derby. The horse produced a second Derby win for trainer William I. Mott and the first Derby victory for jockey Junior Alvarado. Mott won his other Derby title with Country House in 2019, but that victory came after Maximum Security was disqualified.
