On March 7, 1965, hundreds of civil rights advocates, including late Congressman John Lewis, gathered for a peaceful march for voting rights in Selma when they were attacked and beaten by Alabama State Troopers.

The anniversary will be marked by a host of programs, including a service at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, where activists gathered for the march. A bipartisan congressional delegation will travel to Alabama to remember the history and salute civil rights veterans,

However, six decades later, Black leaders are grappling with the reality that some of the progress made over the years has been undone by a series of court rulings, subsequent restrictive state laws, and now the return to power of Donald Trump, who has used his presidential authority to topple racial equity programs and civil rights protections.
