To visit the wat phra kaew grand palace and other temples, do we need to book a tour? Or can we just take a Tuk from place to place and buy tickets there??

You can easily do it on your own! Just as you said, take a Tuk or a taxi from place to place, but make sure you negotiate the price with the driver before hand. Enjoy it!
