An intriguing cave tour featuring monochrome paintings and cave bear scratches. Although the tour is conducted in French, visitors receive an English script for reference. Initially, I was doubtful a…Full review by TravelSMeri

Well worth the visit. We bought the tickets and then came back in the afternoon for our time slot. Fascinating to see the paintings and bear nests. It's freezing in the caves though, take a coat!Full review by Tracy G

The best advice I can offer is get a good map of all the sites you want to visit in this area. Use you GPS and go to the sites early. We lined up at Font de Gaume at 7 . It was no problem , the seats are all marked, and they gave us ticket for personalized guided tours of 3 caves. It was a visit of a lifetime. I suggest going early at Rouffanac. There are many other sites on the road, also duck farms. We stayed in Les Ezyes. What a wonderful vaca.

We did not approach the village from the Sarlat direction but used SatNav to get to the village and followed signs to the caves/grotto once in the village. The site is about 5-10 minutes' drive out of the village. As has been suggested, take something warm to put on whilst you are in the caves. I don't know whether we we were just lucky to have an English-speaking (French) guide, but did not specifically ask for or hire her, but in any event you can obtain an i-pad with an English guide upon deposit of something of value (youngest child, passport, wife, camera etc.)

Can I do a self tour rather than paying over $140 for this day trip? How do I get to the caves from Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac
A:
I had a rented car and drove to the Grotte on my own, paid the entrance fee, and enjoyed the railroad tour into the cave.
