We had family visiting from the UK, with a little boy of 3. Wow! A must see / do in Pietermaritzburg, even if you go alone. Incredibly well preserved.Full review by Inverknoll

I don’t think you can get better value for a few hours of entertainment and education for young children. Many of the exhibits were interactive and numerous staff were on hand to assist all over. The…Full review by NauticalVoyager

The best economical way to reach Pietermaritzburg it's by car for those who love exploring the country side, the distance is about 488 Km single trip and will thus require 5 hours to and 5 hours Re back. You can return in a day it's quite on a hectic side though because you need some good hours to be at Natal museum Alternatively you can take a flight from a Jhb to Pietermaritzburg or fly to Durban and drive Pietermaritzburg. If you go as group leave early with a break say st Harrsmith you can do it and return evening The road is good you stick to s national road through and through stick to N3 I hope I have tried to answer the question

I would use metered taxis rather than the minibus commuter vehicles. Metro taxis is about the most reputable one I can think of. Is hiring a car not an option because the area is small and many firms have free 200km per day which would be more than enough.

Hi As we will be visiting from Australia and will be travelling in a hired people carrier (draw card to be robbed), and will have all our lugguage and possessions with us, I would like to know where I could park (don't mind paying) that would prevent us from being robbed. I REALLY want to visit the museum as I visited the museum in the 70's and I have amazing memories of it which I want to share with my family. Regards Tracy Hart

Hi Tracey, To add to what Reg has posted some other ideas within a few kilometres of the city center: The Howick Falls (27km towards Johannesburg) as well as the Nelson Mandela Capture site monument (same road and just a little further) The African Bird of Prey Sanctuary is out on the Lion Park Road about 20km towards Durban. Out towards Mountain Rise is Crafty Duck - a wildlife rehab centre with interesting snakes that can be handled as well as others from all over the world, there are also crocodiles, iguanas etc that are unable to be released due to injury. The statue of Ghandi in Church street ( about 500m from museum) and the Tatham Art gallery in the centre of the city are also more than worth a pop in for an hour. There is no entrance fee but donations are always very welcome. With regards to parking never leave your possessions in sight as this is just too much temptation for some and an invitation to others, All the alternatives suggested by Reg are as good as each other. if you need somewhere to have a bite to eat, with very secure parking - the Golden Horse Casino on the corner of Ridge and New England Roads has a variety of establishments such as John Dory (fish, seafood and sushi), Vigour and Verve (mainly Indian cuisine) and the Rockefeller's buffet with about 150 different dishes and all you can eat for around R160. There is also a 10pin bowling alley at he same venue if you are averse to gambling. Please keep asking questions as that is the only way to get the most out of your trip. You will find the museum very different from in the 70's. Bigger, better and now charging about R5 entrance fee.
