The name Diamond Harbour was applied by the British, who used it for both river and sea shipping. The area was known since 16th and 17th-century Portuguese river pirates,. There was a fort named Chingrikhali Kella, reportedly built by Portuguese pirates during 1600s, presently dilapidated.
