You can take public transportation: walk to Penn Station ( @34th street and 7th Ave), descend the stairs to take the Long Island Railroad to the Garden City Station, (cost approximately $15 per person one way) then take a taxi or Uber to the museum.
Does this IMAX theater still show select blockbuster movies such as star wars etc?. It used to, but now seems to only list "made for imax" things like "journey under the sea" or "history in the skies"... This is pretty lame

They still do. Just Google Cradle of Aviation movies. You'll see Last Jedi on IMAX.
